The days I save Maham Umer -Roshni

Maham Umer

                                                             The days I save
University is going to open tomorrow on 27th of February, the thunder of excitement wake me up whole night. It’s the best semester among our whole graduation time period. This is the time, when I enter in the practical world of “Media” and this sounds Wow to me.  Lots of Enthusiasm flows in my veins. As I already performed internship at well-known news agency last July where I got to know about news writing and now this is going to be same.
And the very next day I found my friends as thrilled as I am and we all are selected as editors for opening several editions of Roshni newspaper. We have two well-equipped computer labs for English, Urdu and Sindhi sections which provides professional environment. However, it’s going to be most memorable and astonishing experience for all of us.
We as first editors has to work hard for the first edition as this is all new and glittering but tough and responsible work at the same time.
It is hard to express about our learning throughout this whole time.
Team-work, importance of coordination, sense of responsibility, and importance of time are the key learning to me.
Experience is expensive in this field. ‘I know’ is not the word here. We always learn something new in this field every day as the working in odd situations; boycott doesn’t matter to our work and many other tough times.
For me it is slightly different from previous experience at news agency but internship experience remains privilege to one during this entire time.
All memories our precious but Specially, the day when we were not received news from our beat reporters due to semester preparation holidays and we have to publish the issue as there is no holiday of newspaper; me and my colleague first time went to criminology department and spent almost hours with the faculty members who helped us a lot and not only gave us news but briefly explain about the law and order situation in university, I may never know much before this. This day I realized that this is not just a work but informative work. If you work keenly then you’ll be rich with knowledge as well which is the key ingredient for any media person at initial or extreme stage of this field. And many other such sorts of incident happened in this whole fantasy year which are unforgettable and will be useful in our future.
This is the life time experience for all of us which we will never forget!

Process of Roshni

By Ayaz Ahmed Laghari

Roshni is a university based trilingual weekly newspaper publishes from laboratory publication of Mass Communication department, university of Sindh . Newspaper publishes news, articles, features, profiles and interviews, all works of the newspaper is done by the students, all practices which workers usually do in any newspaper organization.
The work start from the inspiring lectures, which are delivered by experienced and senior journalist Sohail Sangi, we can say a boss of the newspaper. No doubt, the students who get admission have zero percent experience in journalism in that case lectures direct them and persuade them to do work. In lectures all students learn how prepare newspaper and its essential parts, its factors and news their importance etc.

Editorial board, a team of Roshni editors prepare all material of the newspaper. Editorial board, divided in three sections, Sindhi, Urdu and English. Students are selected by Sohail Sangi in editorial board respectively. The editors edit news, features, articles, interviews and profiles.

As Roshni newspaper is based on university so news reports are collected from different departments and offices of University of Sindh , adjoined universities and different educational and social organizations. Students have the particular beat; they go for beats on beat day, a day for beats. They collect news and hand them over to the coordinator, a student who manages all the works of newspaper, he, then pass to the editors after reading the news, who will do which work is directed by coordinator. As this is a practical work, so it has also marks which would be included in final term, therefore all students participate in this excited work of journalism and chase with time. For every beat, 5 marks would be given, and for every writing piece, 15 numbers would be counted in annual term.

For these new horses in the journalism, as Sohail Sangi named the initial students included in the editorial board, there is an experienced staff is in the print media lab is appointed. Noor Mohammad Samejo, who works as publication officer, Fida Hussain Gaho, photo lab technician, Anjum Ara Laghari, media news lab incharge, Waheed Rahi, sub-editor, and Fareed Jamali, paster and publication officer. They all perform their duties in well manner and professionally direct every student every thing related with newspaper. And then all horses in last become the tigers of professional journalism.

After editing, then Madam Farheen does proof reading and finally Chairperson Person of the department, Madam Rizwana Chang passes it and then the finally it is time to pasting, all editors gather in the lab and Fareed Jamali help the students in pasting and teach each and every thing about pasting and butter/tracing paper is prepared by the students then this butter/tracing paper is moved to Hyderabad for and next day the students wait for the papers. After getting the newspaper, all editors gather and do binding. In last circulation starts, newspapers move to the readers, students and officials, clerks of the university and send it to the different universities of the country by post.

Lady Driver, Beware! Sonahri shaikh

Lady Driver, Beware!

Feature, by Sonahri shaikh
2k11/MC/93

Lady driver are most noticeable on roads in their driving. Being a woman and performing a man’s deeds is quiet funny but risky. According to the google mostly road accidents are thought up by lady drivers. May be, but why it happens and how?
Some people says that a women are not careful while driving. They don’t have the sense of crossing, overtaking, turning and parking. One of my friend said that “women get panic on horns and they get confused if someone overtakes her car. So it is better to stay 2 miles away from a lady driver”. What if same question I ask from all the male drivers, that in their whole driving experience havent they become confuse just for a second?
Obviously, if a bike or a car overtakes you surprisingly, the driver would be confused for a seconds. But a woman will take mintutes to get fine..
In my experience I have seen many male drivers who perform lame activities during their drive like unwanted horns, turning and crossing without indicators, parking in no-parking area and breaking the signals.
One of my friend shared that while crossing the chowk a car overtaked her sudden that she got in panic and parked the car on the road side. She noticed that all the people who crossed her was commenting and blaming her for the incident. She felt abysmal that why is she blamed? Just because she is a lady driver?
Why we always blame girls in every aspect? Do I take it personal? Or I should take it as a common foolishness in human’s mind.! Same mistakes and stupid activities are also performed by the male drivers on roads than why we only blame a lady driver?
Women just don’t need a space in one’s heart but in other aspects too. If we stop blaming others and pay attention on our mistakes and become careful than it would not be difficult to have a peaceful drive. According to my resaerch and google, nowadays Women are participating in car racing  and there is a lady named as Zahida Kazmi who is hailed as a first lady who drives taxi in Pakistan.
It is not women who messes on roads, it is you. So think about it boys.

Vulgarity of Morning Shows by Farkhunda Shaikh

Vulgarity of Morning Shows
The growing trend of morning shows on different TV channels is poisoning the roots of our identity. Being a Muslim, it is our religious duty to start our day by praising God. But early morning, every host on different TV channels begins their programs by music, laughing, giggling, dancing, jumping and other foolish stuff. All these acts increase absurdity among viewers and people often try to adopt every action of TV-stars in their own life style.
Morning show hosts have introduced so many cheap things in their programs which are now being practiced broadly in our society. The top listed Pakistani hosts like Shaista Wahidi, Nida Yasir, Fahad Khan and many other delightfully celebrate such events and include vulgarities in their show as a part of entertainment that somewhere distract individual’s mind.
These days, crispy topics of morning shows are wedding season, bridal makeups and beauty contest. The so called trend of marriages gets audiences bored. Recently, Shaista Wahidi host of “Utho Jago Pakistan” make wedding week, of already married couple. Every morning female host used to wear bridal dresses that divert mind of house-ladies from their responsibilities and give priority to its fashion and beauty.
Naive women feel zealous in such stupid activities that swiftly move them in to the fantasy world. A man who hardly meets with their daily expenses of life, how they fulfill the worthless requests of their wives? This is a stage of audience, where host should talk as the voice of people and think about the wishes of every class.
The stage shows of Omer Shareef make people laugh; by including some lesson in it. If we compare PTV programs with private channels, we feel a huge difference between them. There is severe lack of programs that entertain in a very well mannered way. Old shows like, 50-50 show, Moin Akhter comedy show and “Tehria Moin Akhter” were very good which did not spoil our custom and values. Likewise, program of Tariq Aziz was very helpful for students that provided a lot of information and knowledge which was enjoyed by all audiences.

The sets need motivational personalities, who are truly sincere to their fields; so that viewer would listen to them carefully. The controversial figures like Maya khan, Veena Malik should not be invited as they often perform such disorganized and different things that now public has stopped taking them seriously. Those who cannot resolve issues of their own life ought not to advise others.  Among all of them, we need a celebrity that give guidance not only about Islam and Islamic teachings but also describe general perspective of life.

Marriage, a business to destroy a girl!
              By Sonahri Shaikh

2k11/MC/93
 Edited by: Farkhunda Shaikh
The concept of marriage is not just choose a partner, get married, have kids, grow them up, get old and THE END.
Though the God prearranged marriages for individuals to get married and give birth to the generation in form of NIKKAH. Marriage is all about relation of love, care, feeling, compromises and respect. But what we are doing?
We have made marriages a business. It does not hurt the feelings of someone but also broken down their dreams too. This problem has greatly increased in our society?  The modern tradition has taken people toward ignorance. A manner of finding bahu’s is against of our moral values. People behaves like that they came to find out a showpieces of perfect girl and have choice to reject them on their dislike.
Nobody willing to understand that girl is a sensitive piece, how much bold she is badly broken in some places.  Other bitter truth is that most of the girls, who are waiting for their date to be fixed as quickly as possible where they taken as a burden by their own family. If she gets a lot of love from their family so she could not get away from the question of society. As any guest entered in to home, their first question is “Shadi kab kar rae hain?” and what the parents reply, “Nahi, bas dua karein”. And the discussion starts. Psychologically, these conversations wounded girls very badly for that reason they tensed and worried on such things in isolation.
About 59% of females in the world commit suicide because of marriage problems. Besides, many girls take the wrong steps because of this pressure; they do Love marriages, court marriages and break down all boundaries to perform this task.

Parents lead their young daughters as soon as they got to be married. By worst practices and difficult rules of our society we make feel our daughter a burden in life. Girls tolerate and compromise so many things for the sake of her family.   She sacrifices at every stage of life like; first priority is her parents, on next stage she take care everything of her husband and last spend her life in raising her children.
Daughters are come to be blessing from God. So awaken people and Let them live their lives. Let’s give her chance to prove herself. Life is not dependable on marriage, it is dependable on dreams and nature made girls a strongest element of earth, if she thinks positively!

Marriage, a business to destroy a girl!
By Sonahri Shaikh

The true concept of marriage is not just choose a partner, get married, have kids, grow them up, get old and THE END.
But, when God felt that the two first humans on earth cannot survive without each other even having all the essentials of life. So he ordered them to get married and they give birth to the generations. Like this the concept of NIKKAH revealed.
Marriage is all about loving, sharing, compromises and respect. But what we are doing? We have made marriage a business. A business of hurting not only a female but her parents and her dreams. Have you ever thought that why nowadays marriage problems are increasing?
Because demands of both sides of the parents are more valued then the couple I can call these things a fashion. That changes every time according to the changing nature of the people! A fashion of finding a perfect bahu. They go to girl’s home like they are going for shopping. Finding a perfect piece of their choice, but if they can’t, they just reject.
But now girl’s parents are also not left behind. They also demand for a perfect daamad. All these activities are the main source to destroy or provoke a girl. This fact cannot be disbelieved that girl is a sensitive piece, no matter how much bold she is, but at some steps she gets sensitive. And that step would be her personal causes. Girl’s first stage of mature dreaming is across her teen age. What parents do is that they start teasing her. Even she is getting ready for a school, wearing uniform up do her hair in front of mirror, she is teased for the husband. That is not even known who would be him?
Think other facts that those girl sitting at home, waiting for her date to be decided, are thought to be as a burden for her parents. No matter how much love she receives from her home. But her mind makes her feel a BURDEN. Because guests stepping inside the home, ask first question “ shadi nahi hui?” and what the parents reply, “ nahi, bas dua karein”. And the discussion starts. This affects her negatively and psychologically too.
About 59% of females in the world attempts suicide because of marriage problems. Those girls stepping to the negativity, Love relationships etc are also the reason of marriage problems.

Why? I want to ask from the parents, that girl is sent here just to GET MARRIED?
Why we make her feel that she is a burden? She is here to tolerate first parents then husband and then child? God has declared a girl the most precious jewel of father.
Grow up people! Let her live her life. Let’s give her chance to prove herself. What if she gets married and in the future she still treated same as she was before? Life is not dependable on marriage. It is dependable on Dreams, a dream of getting educated and a dream to step one step forward than a boy!
To me, Girl is the strongest element on earth, if she walks POSITIVE!

Most pets like to play games, watch television and go for walk with their guardians. In certain countries, they are facilitated with personal beds, sometimes even rooms. Sensitivity and friendly nature of pets helps them to develop a social and emotional relation with humans. Some of pets like dogs can also endanger their life in order to safe its owner’s life.

Aiming to Promote Education
 EDITED BY sonahri shaikh

Miss Fatema Modi, head of Assessment Department, Habib School Girls Karachi. In her busy schedule she wrote three academic books for the deprived children. She aims that every child in our country should not face the consequences of illiteracy.

1. Did you choose to write or someone made you to write?
The principal of my school, Ms. Nargis Alavi, recommended my name to TCF in the year 2009 when they were in search of people to write a very comprehensive teacher’s guide for English of grades IV and V.
(TCF is a professionally managed, non-profit organization set up in 1995 by a group of citizens concerned with the dismal state of education in Pakistan. It promotes education to the deprived children of Pakistan, thereby removing barriers of class and privilege.
It was a challenge for me as it was the first time for me to be a writer.

2. When was the first book of yours published?
The first two books were published in April 2009 by Noorani publishers. The third book for the series ‘Advance with English’ was published in the year 2011.

3. What was the hardest part of writing this book?
It was a learning experience for me to bring my level down for the deprived ones and thing according to their needs. It was hours and hours of research – books, internet, talking aloud sessions with teachers and coordinators. I felt the thrill of the challenge till the very last full stop of the books.

4. What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
Planning a lesson always fascinates me. I used my creativity to its optimum for animated, learning lessons and then compiling the collected data into its related skill, i.e. speaking, reading, listening, writing, grammar and vocabulary.

5. Are there any concepts in your books that are new to the reader?
For TCF teachers, there were a lot of new words and ideas; but the best part was that they showed their keenness to learn and adapt all. I have provided a glossary for vocabulary, and names of books and websites for references.

7. What process did you go through to get your book published?
I was assigned by the TCF so the technicalities with the publishers were handled by them only. But yes, I definitely was involved at every step with them.

8.  What do you like to read in your free time?
I enjoy all kind of reading – light to heavy – according to my mood. Paulo Coelho and Mitch Albom are one of my favorite writers. Amongst the many favorite books, Alchemist, Harry Potter series, Eat-Pray-Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, Tuesdays with Morrie, Have a little Faith, Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teenagers by Sean Covey, Daughters of Arabia by Jean Sasson, Kane and Abel by Jeffery Archer, etc.
9. What are your plans for future?
As a professional, I aim to make headway in my forte i.e. Formative Assessment. Also, I would love to write more for the classrooms and teachers.
10. What do you think is the future of reading and writing?
The culture of reading has generally gone down. We teach children to read and to inculcate the habit of reading for pleasure. We need to equip them with books that they enjoy, giving them access to those books. The first place for this is school. Good readers would eventually produce good writers.

The teachers are fully occupied with their time in the campus; therefore, it is difficult for them to take out time to plan effectively. A detailed, step by step, guidance with complete resources was the need of the hour.)
It was a challenge for me as it was the first time for me to be a writer- J - and also, I did not want to let down my principal’s trust in my talent.

3. What kind of books have you written?
Teachers’ guides for English of classes IV, V and VI. Academics related.

4. What was the hardest part of writing this book?
I had to visit the TCF schools, to be in the classrooms, and then only I could perceive the challenges of the teachers as well as the time allocation for lessons to be conducted in the class. It was a learning experience for me to bring my level down for the deprived ones and thing according to their needs. It was hours and hours of research – books, internet, talking aloud sessions with teachers, coordinators, etc. But without doubt, I felt the thrill of the challenge till the very last full stop of the books.

I have provided a glossary for vocabulary, and names of books and websites for references.

7. What did you find most useful  while writing this book?
My own perception augmented and a whole new world opened before me for exploration. I got to see a world which most of the blessed ones simply watch for a while on TV or read about it in books. While visiting one of the TCF set up, as I was observing a class, a child fainted. After she was taken care of, I came to know that the child had not eaten anything for the last 36 hours. ‘Stunned’ is the only word to describe my feelings at that moment. Sharing this incident anywhere and anytime still brings tears to my eyes. From that day on, I often pep talk about the deprived ones with my children to make them realize how blessed we are.
8. What process did you go through to get your book published?
I didn’t have to do much. I was assigned by the TCF so the technicalities with the publishers were handled by them only. But yes, I definitely was involved at each and every step with them.
9.  What do u like to read in your free time?

11. What do you think is the future of reading and writing?
The culture of reading has generally gone down. The simplest way to make sure that we raise literate children is to teach them to read, and to inculcate the habit of reading for pleasure. We need to equip them with books that they enjoy, giving them access to those books, and letting them read them. The first place for this is school. Roshni:  Why did you choose teaching as a profession?
Dr Javed: I had always liked this field, when I was young; I enjoyed the company of literate personalities like, Professor Persian Language at UoS, Huzoor Ahmed Saleem, founder of Cosmopolitan School System, Professor Arshad Raza, Prof. Habeeb Arshad, Ateeq Ahmed Jilani, and advocate Mushtaq Ahemd. From there; I got the desire to become like them.

Dr Javed: As I belong to a lower class family, it was never easy to continue my study having an excessive burden to support family. I therefore worked as a part-time electrician. My patience was rewarded and I was appointed as lecturer at Urdu Department University of Sindh.

Roshni: Why did you prefer research field over creative work?
Dr Javed: Earlier in my career, I wrote many short poems, ghazliyat, essays and afsaney. But, soon I realized that this field expects a lot of time and attention, unfortunately I was too busy to keep the wheel of my domestic responsibilities moving. I therefore had no option but to switch my field of interest and research work on Urdu Literature was always my second interest after writing. Still, for my catharsis, I seldom write some poems or short stories.
Roshni: How do you compare both fields (writing & Research)?
Dr Javed: One cannot justify both fields by placing one over another. Each has its own importance, its own domain. Writing poetry or prose is an art to convert your feelings and ideas on paper. Research on Urdu literature tells us the quality of today’s and old Urdu Literature by their comparative study.
Roshni: How many research papers have you written?
Dr Javed: I wrote my first monograph during masters, on “Personality and Work of Fazal Ahmed Kareem Fazli.” Further I have written research papers about research-work done earlier on “Ameer Minayi.” Further I have written articles on “Urdu Tabsara Nigari,” “Urdu Taqreer Nigari” and many other topics.
Roshni: How many M.Phil/PhD scholars have you supervised?
Dr Javed: Six PhD and two M.phil Scholars have completed their degree under my supeervision, while, twelve M.phil and PhD scholars are under process.
Roshni: Being a researcher of Urdu literature, how do you see excessive use of slang words in Urdu?
Dr Javed: Earlier, slangs were considered bad and therefore were not included in dictionaries. But, now many slang words are not only accepted but also included in Urdu dictionaries, considering their extensive use in spoken Urdu. However, one should use them before selective gatherings and listeners.
Roshni: What do you think of young generation Urdu poets?
Dr Jawed: I consider them disgrace to Urdu Poetry. This poetry has worse effects on our youth and influences their thoughts. This vulgarity would not last long. However, this generation also has poets like, Amjad Islam Amjad, Mohsin Naqwi, Iftikhar Arif and Jameel-ud-deen Aali.
Roshni: Why do you think is youth disinterested in Urdu Literature?
Dr Javed: Due to increasing redundancy, most of our youth propel towards English language instead, which creates many job opportunities in national and multi-national companies. Parents too, focus on science-subjects rather than their national language.
