London to Landanza (landaabazar)
[Masscomm-2k11] Feature-Ali raza rizvi

The word Landabazar visualises a scenario of heaps of some second-handed cloths, kept to sell on carts, surrounded by mediocre people who are busy in bargainnig. Just to persuade passers-by, the vendors chant different slogans like, " ye garam garam sweater le jaayen baji 60-60 rupey mein' or " 100 k 2 ___ 100 k 2, " or " aajaayen g , chhaantee karlain 40_ 40 me...
Mostly people are aware of dynamics of Landabazar but very few of us know the historical background of Landa bazar, one may wonder how this word (landabazar) was generated ? and what does it mean?
Before 70s, it was illegal to import used clothes or other articles in country, hence, these commodities ( in a less quantity) were smugulled here, through the route of Iran & Afghanistan. later in the regime of Great Z.A Bhutto, an agreement with Britain govt was signed & as a result second-hand cloths were allowed to be brought from different cities of England including London( capital city of England), the first Bazar( of second-hand clothes) was staged at Shair Shah, Karachi,( central market of second-hand articles, imported from different parts of the world) was named as "London Bazar". This word went through many alteration with the passage of time and finally became "Landa bazar".
Earlier, these commodities were imported  mainly from England. But now, many other countries like USA, Canada, France, Italy, Germany,South Korea, Japan and China---- export not only second-hand cloths but many other useful stuff. The consignments from these countries are ported at Karachi and then brought to upcountry markets and sold out to retailers of different cities including Hyderabad.
Hyderabad is considerd to be the second biggest market of Landa bazar (after Karachi) due to its quality stuff. Within the city, landabazar have different kinds of markets like, the most famous market around the corners of Jama-cloth( old Tara-chand hospital ), comprising 70-80 shops and more than 100 push-carts and way-side stalls. shopkeepers are mainly pathans.
Another market on Station Road (near Pakka Qila ), known for gents-stuff, is not very big though, consisting upto 20 shops & more than 50 push-carts and way-side stalls, yet it is big enough to meet the requirements of costumers. mostly, people from Hazara community have their stake in this market,
The articles in these markets are sold on seasonal bases. In summer season, stuff like Bed sheets, carpets, nets, crockery, hand bags, shorts and bermudas, caps, t-shirts, belts, sandles and slippers, curtains etc are sold, these markets are not so crowdy & People also avoid exposure to sun.
But, with the advent of winter, these markets become the shopping paradise of every individual. From all over the city, people come here to purchase the commodities for their personal use as well as in large quantities for their retail outlets. In winters, stuff like woolen clothes, jackets, coats, swaeters & hoodies, cardigans (ladies and gents), blankets, all sort of bags, shoes(for both ladies and gents) and toys for children are available in a good quantity.
The third known venue for Landa bazar is the market of " Naya-Pul " which is considered as shoes market of Hyderabad. It includes 35 -40 shops and more than 20 push carts. Shopkeepers of this market are also Pathans, deal in imported and used shoes. But, from last few years, good number of shops have replaced thier outlets with China-made unused shoes. one of the shopkeeper told its reason as it was due to increase in demand of China-made shoes apart from increasing inflation.
Interestingly, prices here are quite affordable and much less than other commercial areas in the posh parts of the city. But still you need to be good at the bargaining. The seasonal shopkeepers would on the first sight make a judgement if the buyer is a newcomer, and would announce a fairly high price. If you are new to the bazaar and the bargaining too, make a rough guess by just telling half the price asked. Little wonder if you succeed in getting the article on what price you have suggested. This goes on and on the entire year.
