Dino jo Pirr Feature by Sonia Shaikh

A journey of thousands of people who travelled miles away from their homes just to get the water is proved as a step in the progress of Thar.
Water has remained an issue for desert Thar since long, enduring smiles waiting for rain and hopes for monsoon. The hardships of these people can never be neglected for taking the water out of the well having depth 150-200 feet by pulling the ropes by using the camel’s force and then carry it to the homes back. In rainy seasons, these people leaving their arguing statements behind go for farming to use the rain water, for harvesting more and more crops. Economy of villagers is quite different from the luxuries economy of city which depends upon business and industries but economy of villager’s base on two things one is agriculture and second one is having domestic animals and trade of it for these both ways water is very important with out it they can't have enough benefit from it. That’s why when rain kisses the thirsty land of Thar,  As a result, their struggle brought fruits of smiles on the faces of people out their.

                       My First Trip To Dubai
                     Feature By Talha Asghar

From the childhood, I always wants to travel a lot specially internationally and explore some new adventure because i always wanted to do some adventurous. So, last year suddenly my father decided a trip to Dubai for attending Gulf food festival. I had visited Saudi Arabia 3 times before but travelling to Dubai feels like my dream comes true because travelling to Dubai is something which i always dreaming.
Dubai International Airport is one of the most beautiful and busiest airport in the world. The view of the airport was pleasant to the eye. When I reached there I saw different rules around cab system. If you are with your family so they will provide you cabs with lady drivers and female family member should be on front seat which is really appreciated that women are earning through the equal way as men.
Next morning I go to Dubai Expo Centre for attending Gulf food festival’s opening, Gulf Food is known as the city of business. People trade their goods and import export their goods as well. One of the best thing about my visit was there was a whole street categorized in portions and mentioned as different countries. Every single portion of particular country were providing their goods on different stalls. Many stalls were offering free testing to sell their products. I tried almost every country's stall and they were so polite. Many stalls gave me lots of free stuff to promote their brand.
Luckily on that time Pakistan Super League’s opening was also held at Dubai International Stadium and I am a very big fan of cricket, So I just book a ticket of opening ceremony and I enjoyed a lot because there was an performance of Abida Praveen and Ali Zafar and also a performance of international artist Jason Derulo and other reason was that I never seen a cricket match live in cricket stadium before. It was a great experience to watch international players live.
Next morning I decided to go out for discovering the new city because I always heard a lot about the Dubai’s tourist spots like desert safari, Burj ul Arab, Burj Khalifa and now I got a chance to go and visit by my self. So I gets the best package of Desert Safari, it was a great adventure for me because of the dangerous driving skills on hilly sand. Then we go to the place where they offered some great food and drinks. After the sunset the program was started. There was a lots of exciting performance of fireworks and tanoura dance and for the first time in my life i saw a belly dance which was so awful for me.
On next day, I planned for the whole Dubai tour where I went to Dubai museum and then I visited Dubai Gold Souk Market then I visited Jumeirah beach for experience Burj ul Arab with my own eyes. Then I went to Atlantis hotel which gave a great pleasure to my eyes and I click lots of photos there. And then I move to the great Dubai mall not for shopping but for visiting and opposite to the Dubai mall there is a Burj Khalifa located. I took a lots of selfies with Burj Khalifa and there is also a famous Dancing Fountain which moves on a song. Experiencing the dancing fountain and Burj Khalifa is one of the best moment in my life.
Next day, I came back to Pakistan with lots of memories and adventure with a lots of photos which I always get saved.

Bhando Qubo: A millennia old tomb
Feature
Safdar Gahnghro-BS Roll 131

A tomb, which is approximately 30 kilometres far away from Larkana, left with no its caretaker seems like a grave of ordinary man. Its walls are not reconstructed and painted which makes a visitor uncomfortable to be there for much time. Tomb is bit charred from its inside. Its door is like a mere place of entering but without wooden block. Little chunks of masonry are lying on the flour. Its out-view, which doesn’t cover much area afford only 9 or 10 people to stand easily there, is little bit grassy land but mostly filled with sand. Its mound's colour is vanishing and is near to have dent on its surface. It is quite vivid to people of village “Panjo Goth”, which is at 10 kilometres away from tomb, because it is built on high place. This shrine is of unsung hero “Rato khan Jalbani”, who laid the foundation of  Ratodero , now taluka of district Larkana, known as Bhando Qubo or Bhande Jo Qubo.
Rato khan Jalbani was the son of Sardar Sohbdar khan Jalbani. After his father, he became his father's successor. Current chief of Jalbani nation, Sardar Ali Nawaz khan Jalbani, is from the Rato khan's breed. Basically, Rato khan was a warrior and waged the number of wars with those who came in his way to defeat him but all were defeated. He came through Iran to Ratodero and made there huge fort named “Rato Fort”. In 18th century, Ahmed shah Abdali assaulted on Ratodero and beheaded the Rato khan Jalbani because Rato khan mobilized his people to fight against the Pathan marauders, who deliberately prompted the violence and waged the wars over weaken ones. Ahmed Shah Abdali took the head of Rato khan with himself and left his body headless there. Danish Jalbani, cousin of quo-chief of Jalbani nation, said that scuffle between Ahmed Shah and Rato khan was over a lady. He, further, said that the lady was from the Syed family. She was captured by Ahmed shah Abdali and fled from Ahmed's prison and came under the protection of Rato khan. So, Ahmed shah Abdali attacked on Ratodero. Bhando Qubo is remained the influx of strangers, who left their homes due to scarcity of water and migrated to Ratodero, because at that time Sukkur river's branch was shared to Ratodero. Many foreign and domestic archaeologists Dr. Ghulam Moihuddin Veesar, the professor of archelogy department of Shah Abdul Latif Khairpur University, Dr. Qasid Mallah and professor Marco Madella, University of Barcelona, excavated the Bhando Qubo for finding the secrets. Many old things were found by excavating which helped to come easily on finding that it is as ancient as Indus river, Dr. Mallah said to tribune express. According to Dr. Ghulam Moihuddin that this tomb is treasure of secrets and was buried with unfound mysteries that attracted to foreign archaeologists to reach to Bhando Qubo for excavation. One of indigenous people of that site said that Bhando Qubo is 2nd oldest place in Larkana, on first is Moen jo daro, which witnessed many researchers and archaeologists across the world for excavation. While talking to reporter of express news, Gul Bahar sheikh, said that Bhando Qubo is the grave of Shaheed Sardar Rato khan Jalbani, whose name is labelled on city called Ratodero. He, further, told that many people still visit that shrine and remind the backdrop behind the tragedy and feel proud to have such a Brave hero, who fought with invaders die in a ditch.
The word Bhando means the body without head; it is taken from the Sindhi language which means a “torso”. Because, Ahmed Shah Abdali executed the Rato khan Jalbani. So, that’s why, it is named as “Bhando  Qubo”. This place keeps a lot mean for the inhabitants of Ratodero because this Tomb is the sign of our city's existence. Notwithstanding the hero, he is still unsung across Sindh. His shrine is still not retouched for construction.

Library- a reading place or sitting place?

Isra Aziz
2k18/MC/65

Library: When one think about this word, he goes directly into the world of books, knowledge and information. It’s a place where one can study number of books. And with the help of these books students, scholars, researchers or anybody can get their answers of all type of questions, whether their question is about their studies or related to any other information. The essentials for a library are proper sitting arrangements, multiple study halls furnished with air-condition and reading friendly environment. In short, it offers people free excess to a wealth of information that they often can’t find elsewhere.
Being the second largest city of Sindh, still Hyderabad has very few libraries. I visited one of its libraries that is very famous by its name called Shamsul Ulema Daudpota Library. As I entered, I saw many people sitting in the garden, laying their books on the grass and were having an informal conversation. I moved forward to enter in the huge reading hall that was full of books. Thousand of books were all around me. All books were kept in the book shelves and some research based books were locked in the cupboards. And to get any book, it’s an obligation on students to ask for permission from a librarian.
In the second reading hall, a person caught my attention through his way of arguing with the librarian for his library’s membership card. He was asking to renew his card so he can easily get new books to study. But, forgetting where he was standing at the moment, a place where to maintain silence all the time.
Later, I took an interview of former librarian who had served in this library for many years. Basically she was a senior librarian there. She shared her experience with me and some information about this library that how it was established. She told me that the oldest library of Hyderabad named as “Shamsul Ulma Daudpota Government Sindh library” was established in October 1961. At the beginning, it was settled in a section of NJV high school Karachi and after one year it moved to Hyderabad’s Muslim college. In 1965, afterwards the finalization of its new building, it transferred and regained its position, which is now in the exercise of Sindh Provincial Museum. In July 1971, the heirs of doctor Umar Bin Muhmmad Daudpoto, the great scholar of the time, contributed his collection of books, furniture and other components to this library. This library has been running placidly under the administration of culture department because at the time of division of education department, all dominion of public libraries was moved to the newly founded culture department, government of Sindh.
I was totally mesmerized by its building structure, constructed so beautifully and well-furnished both from inside and outside. The three reading halls, separate sections for CSS candidates, oriental section, rooms for ladies and children and a canteen was also included in its area.
This library is basically a public library where around 500 to 600 visitors from different cities and villages are always welcome from 9am to 7pm on working days. Having almost 90,000 collections of books, it provides books of all genres either in Sindhi, Urdu, English, Arabic or Persian to its readers. But, the situation is students from different age groups study in the same library, while the other main cities of Pakistan have specific libraries for particular ages.
At the end what I observed is, around two to three hundred readers visit this library on daily basis. But not all the readers are really concerned with their study goals. They do not truly visit this library to fulfill their aims. Few of them visit this library to have comfort in an air conditioned rooms and to enjoy a mind blowing environment. They come to have some fun and spend their time by doing gup-shups with their friends that causes disturbance and distraction for others during the study. The noises that these people create are totally unbearable while studying. Not only in the reading halls, one can find out in the garden as well one and two groups of people having tea, talking in loud voices and makes an environment unacceptable for a person who literally wants to have consideration. There is no proper management and environment that actually library provides to its readers.
All in all, library is a place of reading but unfortunately due to the lack of resources and mismanagement, the library has become mere place of sitting. Majority of students come here for serious study but they just limited themselves to sit there freely due to the lack of reading-friendly environment.

Shikarpur: The City of Gates

Noor-ul-Ain Siddiqui |Monday 10 February 2020|                                                                                              2k18/MC/118

Castles and forts sound intimidating and speak power but what if we come across with the same castle in a complete different condition? Sometimes you won’t believe what you see before yourself but hides within a glorious past. The city Shikarpur was guarded by seven gates and a window and it is said that all these gates and the window got closed just as the sun set. The city was planned and well developed in terms of infra structure and its underground drainage system. The hydrants were hired who used to wash the streets and clean the drains with disinfectants; they also lit the streets with lanterns. It was a sight to see when people gathered at the autaaks to mingle and have their meal together.
Shikarpur was a hub of trading during the 17th century and was called as Emerald City. The city was recognized for its hospitability, culture, civilization, architecture and clothing, hand looms and embroidery. People of Shikarpur were tolerant and peace loving. This city has important roots of trading because it was near Bolan Pass and two national highways interconnect the city.
Almost 4 centuries back, Shikarpur was quite modern for its time because of the infrastructure, trading and people’s interest in education. Shikarpur was commercial and financial base in the British rule, Central Bank of India established one of their branches in Shikarpur in 1940s. It is famous for its educational institutes; Shikarpur has the honor to have the first degree college in the country.  It wasn’t called “Paris of Sindh” for any reason.
People of Shikarpur were fond of hunting as it was a famous hunting ground and had a place called “Shikargah”. The city got its name from the famous sport of hunting; the word Shikar’s literal meaning is to hunt. It is because of the dense forest near Shikarpur.
Shikarpur is a district and it has its three sub divisions known as Garhiyasin, Lakhi Ghulam Shah and Khanpur. The downtown of the city is decorated with a clock tower which is build with the red stone by the Bajaj family in 1935. There is a famous bazaar which is covered by teak wood roof which is known as Dhak bazaar which is a marvel for the visitors because of the eye catchy architecture. It was said that Shikarpur had eight beautiful gardens but now only the Shahi Bagh is in a good condition. The civil hospital of Shikarpur has an interesting history itself, it was built by a Hindu philanthropist Rai Bahadur Udhodas Tarachand, also known as RBUT hospital and he was very down to earth person that he wrote his name on the marble footsteps of the hospital so the patients could step on his name so he could earn the reward, there was a statue of Rai Bahadur that was later shifted to university of Sindh and placed in the Sindhology department’s museum.
Every city or country has their specialty when it comes to their food and cuisine so as Shikarpur. The famous food items are the kulfi falooda, Dewan sweets and ice creams and the famous pickle. Haji Maula Bux Memon and Sikander pickles are the most famous pickle manufacturing companies. The pickles of Shikarpur are famous across the world and are in great demand which is something people look forward to while visiting Shikarpur, pickling is a home based business.
The significance of this city is because of the gates which act as the guardians of the city, these doors are Lakhidar, Hathidar, Siwidar, Wagnodar, Karandar, Khanpuridar, and Hazaridar. It is said that these gates were used for different purposes such as trading and transport. It is said that Hathidar was used for the entrance of elephants that carried goods and Lakhidar was linked to the road which leads to an area known as Lakhi. Today, Lakhidar and Hathidar are considered as the commercial and food street of the city.
The interesting information I gathered from my grandfather, who has spent his childhood and got his education from this famous city, my grandfather told me that he himself has experienced glory and fame of this city and witnessed its golden days, he says there was a thick brick wall at Hathidar and was very long but then people occupied it and made their houses over there. As we have our home at Nabi Shah Mohalla, my grandfather says that adjacent to our mohalla there was a pond of fresh water where people used to take a bath and in the evening, it was used for boating. My grandfather also used to boat there and says the boats were made of wood log and attached with four drums which floated the surface. At that time, there were separate areas for women who used to come there for bath and had separate bathrooms as well but after partition the pond became dry and authorities cut its connection with the canal.
As a child my grandfather has very funny and interesting experiences in the streets of Shikarpur, as there was an area near Nabi Shah Mohalla known as Kafla Qila where traders from Iran and Afghanistan used to stay at night, they came along with camels loaded with dry fruits and clothes, my grandfather along with his friends and cousin used to go there at night and steal the dry fruits and run away and the pathan traders chased after them.
From reviewing this glorious history of the famous city Shikarpur and seeing the current condition of the city, it is a complete contrast from the past. The past was magnificent in every way and the present is the requiem of those glories. It was after 1947 riots Shikarpur was populated with the rural majority and it started to decay and lost its beauty.
As I have spent a decent amount of time in this city, it was very disappointing to see the city in its bitter form, you won’t experience the same energy which was present in the old times, and the city is quite dull now. There is no check and balance, no care of streets and buildings collapsed because of no maintenance, wood got stolen from these historical remains, now only skeletons are left of these sights.
The drainage system is destroyed, no hydrants are there now to look after the streets, and encroachment is there and for this reason street become narrower. There is no sign of gates, the city is unguarded now.
We do not value things which we have and when they are lost, we lament over them and remember the past which is gone and only remains are left, same is with this poor city which has seen its golden days, now is decaying. It is ruined by its own sons and dwellers from those who got shelter once in the city now left it on its own.

Lahooti Melo is recognized as the centenary of poetry, music, dance, and arts. It’s the first global Sufi, folk, rock music festival. Lahooti Melo is the original event presented in Hyderabad, Jamshoro, accommodated by Saif Samejo who is known by way of the founder of the event. Saif Samejo is similarly known as the representative of a band ‘sketches’ and he is the brain behind Lahooti Melo. He had specified loads of probabilities to the youth to be a volunteer with him for this gigantic happening.
There have been four editions to this event and every time it was plentiful more than the past one. I went to Lahooti Melo when the event was organized in the biggest university of the Asia ‘University of Sindh’. The massive name internationally like ‘Eva Zu Beck’ participated in a session known as ‘EVA on the road’. The cast of ‘laal kabootar’ was presented to promote their movie. Lahooti basically is a 3-day event, and the programs are categorized by performances by band or solo and talks and sessions and including inauguration session.
It's always fun and informative to visit such events because you can connect to them spiritually and culturally. You learn more about historic events related to your culture. You learn about your people and their interests. You learn about your music. As a Sindhi, it was really joyful to know about my own culture. How our culture is so rich, how our music is so rich. It was a eureka moment for me when I got to know my own people and from where I really belong. I was really proud to know that I belong to such a rich culture.

As a small city girl, it is really prideful that an event like Lahooti Melo was started in Hyderabad. It feels really good to know that our people care about their culture, history, music, Sufism, and folks. Furthermore, there were people from other countries too. There was a showstopper Kashmir band who won the hearts of people with their electrified rock music. Now we can talk about concerts which are also organized In Hyderabad city are the way to different from the original lahooti Melo.

The concert I attended last was Asim Azhar's concert which was held in LUMHS jamshoro presented by the well-known event planner shaz rind. One of the best concerts I’ve attended so far. The huge difference between lahooti Melo or any concerts is the difference in time but asim Azhar's concert was all under control of punctuality the vibe around that place was unexceptional. The concert was followed by ‘Canadian rapper Sheraiki’, ‘The Hashtags’, and ‘Muzammil Memon, Beatboxer’. There were even barriers between the male crowd and the female crowd. Grillers valley well-known eatery was also available and the mirror magic was one exclusive thing in the event known as ‘Concierto night II’. It was a great night indeed to have fun with friends, good food and great music by everyone’s heartthrob Asim Azhar. The one thing which was different from other events was convincible timing and punctuality. Although the event was held far from the city Hyderabad but still I reach home before midnight. Lahooti Melo and other events don’t have this many people miss much performance due to waiting up for long. Lahooti Melo has a free entry except for the music bands there were many talk sessions which youth aren’t captivated in, and it makes a vast alteration to concert nights.

I can acknowledge that both events were a gratified moment for me that we are endorsing our culture and inspecting such big international names and artists coming over to our city Hyderabad, Jamshoro.

Adulthood Near To Death

Areeba Haroon-ur-Rasheed

For some people life is everything to live up to. Struggle, hard work, achievement, money, friends, relations and this list goes on but for what? Just to live a life. A good healthy life but in a world where the livings are prisoners of ‘CELL’ phone and spelled bound because of many other scientific magic’s the living life of a teenager or if we say so a adult has become way more than difficult to imagine and many things have come up to increase the gap between the only true, loyal and faithful relation of a child and parents.
Parents are the people you look up to in any problems or to share anything but what if someone is ready to die rather than talk about it? Let alone it be their parents. This generation has advanced itself to a level where people don’t know how to talk or share their feelings except putting a status about it.
The more platforms to open up about anything have also made us introvert in our lives. Social sites, hidden chats and many other open platforms have made people more conscious.
These age children are the flowers of very unreliable garden, like the garden is not a place to flourish not until and unless it has its owner of the gardener, because of the gardener it seems very easy to grown any plant but the care, giving proper food like water and sunlight on the right time is all on him and as same as we human also needs someone like him and the gardener of our life is our parents to share, to fight, to argue and to get angry it’s all our right to behold but at the end we need someone to look after us, know what we want at the right time and at the right place.
Years back, a family of 6 members well established, well brought up leading a very good life suddenly got hit up by a storm. When the 2nd child of the family started to behave out of the way and no one tried to find it out as they named it a phase that it happens in this age but the question remains same why it happens? Going further things started to get worse the communication became less and more frequently arguments would come up, more fights would happen and most importantly the gap graph touched the sky. The parents started to worry and the only solution to every problem they found was to give in, whatever the demand was, it would get fulfill and one day this led them to the biggest disaster of their life, once in a life time when they stopped him or should say ignored him brought him at the gate of death as he shot himself in the head.
There are many stories to hear and ponder over; like a child ended his good going (seems) life but to find ending his life the only solution is not his fault but is also the fault of people around him, who couldn’t find that he needed someone to listen to him, not to lecture him but understand him and top of that the most important thing to care about is that he even does not want to speak about it. And not just parents, the children should also try to speak and open up about the problems they are facing to a trusted person, they should try to reach out for help and discussing the issues of life doesn’t not in any means that one is not strong enough to face it; it just simply means that one is brave enough to let other know what he is facing and no one but parents are the only people in our life who would care, keep our secrets, listen, understand and try to solve it at the same time.
Remember your life is too precious to end it and the world is more beautiful to explore rather than to end the last hope of getting everything better.
